Farmers Almanac Has Spoken! Get Prepared – NOW.

Farmers Almanac Has Spoken! Get Prepared – NOW.

The kids are back in school and last weeks low temperature dropped to 50 degrees. Argggh, a painful reminder that winter is around the corner. As a matter of fact, The Famous Farmers Almanac has been published  for the 2013-14 season and it is screaming for everyone in the Midwest and Northeast  to pay attention. God, I want to take a nap just for saying that. I am not ready – even a bit. Oh, well..the season won’t wait.

So, what does that mean? Well – in short, it means to Prepare for  bitter cold and potentially dangerous winter months.  There are four areas to consider NOW – before the crazy weather shows up:

  • HOME/APT PREP
  • PEOPLE PREP
  • CAR PREP
  • ANIMAL PREP (Yep, Seriously…)

Over the next ten days, I will post one thing to do per day. Home “Prepping” can seem like an overwhelming task to many. If you break it down step by step, it’s not a big deal at all.

What is today’s assignment? Two EASY Steps

STEP ONE: CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITIES

Take some time to consider what could happen in a Winter Emergency. Let’s not get too ridiculous here. While it is true that the Zombie Apocolypse COULD happen during a winter storm , the probability of it happening (ever) is very, very low. So – let’s just deal with what is Probable. During the winter months, the biggest threats to a HOME are:

  • A Horrendous Snowstorm that leaves families housebound for an extended period
  • A Snowstorm and/or Ice Storm that Knocks out Power
  • Someone getting Trapped on a Road during a Storm
  • Loss of Communication Between Family Members

STEP TWO:  EMRACE TECHNOLOGY.

We live in the age of technology and smart phones.  These can be an enormous help learning about, preparing for and surviving an urgent weather situation – IF they are charged and accessible. Ensure that everyone who has a phone keeps it fully charged at all times. Create a charging station in your home that everyone uses before they go to sleep each night. Download emergency apps that could be useful in a winter situation.

  • Weather.com
  • NOAA Weather Radio
  • Winter Survival Kit

Now, see, wasn’t that easy? Taking a moment to consider the situations you and your family could find yourselves in AND downloading a couple of Apps – Suddenly you are off an running in your PREP efforts!
